Soup's On!

soup is on! January is National Soup Month

The Friendly Family Dentists at Aspen Grove Serve Up Winter Soup Recipes

January is Soup Month. And, with the weather taking a definite turn toward frigid winter temperatures, it’s the perfect meal to warm your insides.

Soup is also easy on the budget and can be packed with nutritious veggies or lean proteins like beans and lean meats.

Need even more reasons to consider this “souper" food?

How about it’s potential to help you shed those extra holiday pounds you may have put on? According to a study out of Purdue University, eating soup can slow your rate of calorie consumption and that gives your brain some time to register fullness. Studies also suggest that soup’s satiating properties (it makes you full) can help you control your weight.

Best yet, soup is a one pot meal you can make in the morning and let the family eat all day; leaving you with time to read that book you’ve been trying to get to.
Here are our suggestions for getting started.

Greek Lemon Chicken Soup

Did you know that chicken soup has been scientifically proven in some studies to potentially work better than medicine on the common cold? This greek version, with lemon, chives, and crushed red pepper is a fresh twist on an old standby.

Creamy Broccoli and White Bean Soup

The beauty of this recipe is that it produces a rich, creamy soup with no dairy required. Instead, white beans are used as a thickener. What a great way to get some extra veggies into your family’s diet.

Zuppa Toscana

Based on a dish from the Olive Garden, this soup incorporates a healthy dose of kale which is high in iron, Vitamin K, and Vitamin A.

Lentil Soup

Rich in protein, fiber, and folate the little lentil legume packs a ton of nutrition. Plus, unlike other legumes, lentils don’t need to be soaked overnight, making this soup a convenient alternative on busy nights.

Pho

Pho is a Vietnamese soup comprised of rice noodle, broth. Some veggies (often fresh bean sprouts) and meat. Lime and fresh herbs like basil and cilantro give it a bright, vibrant tasted. Start out with this basic recipe, then, start exploring this exotic soup.

Split Pea Soup

Because of its green color, this soup sometimes gets overlooked but if you’re into sweeter foods, we suggest you give it a try. Something magical happens when dried split peas break down into a thick, naturally creamy, and delicious soup with a hint of sweetness. Ham can be added to a salty balanced dish or you can serve it up vegetarian-style.

So, soup up your family meals this week with some warm, healthy, comforting soup!
