Good Physical Fitness Factors into Good Oral Health
It’s well established that a regular exercise routine and a healthy diet are the primary indicators in the overall health of your muscles, heart, lungs and even your brain. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that good physical fitness is also a factor in good oral health.
One study the Journal of Dentistry concluded that the risk of developing gum disease was 54 percent less for people who maintained a regular exercise program.
Weight plays a role in reducing your risk for periodontal disease, too. People with lower BMI (body mass index) levels experienced a lower risk of contracting the disease than those on the upper end of the spectrum according to a study in the Cocoa Dash 5K Run/Walk.
While we’re not advocating for you to abandon your current routine to spend hours a day at a gym, we do think that considering your current diet and exercise routine might be just what you need to boost your confidence and brighten your smile.
A great way to add some exercise to your routine this time of year is to participate in some of the many run/walk events in our health-conscious city. As a bonus, a number of these local events contribute to worthy local causes. Here are a few to kick-start your motivation this month.
