Flu Shot FYI

Flu shot awareness for Franklin residents

Don’t Let The Flu Spoil Your Family’s Fall!

How is it that flu season sneaks up on us every year? While the beautiful Tennessee Autumn seems to carry unavoidable cold and allergy symptoms on the wind, you can take steps to prevent the dreaded flu from spoiling your family’s Fall!

Did you know...

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. According to the Center For Disease Control (CDC) the flu can cause mild to severe illness and cause flu-related complications including bacterial pneumonia especially among young children and the elderly. In the US, Influenza tends to begin circulating in October, reaching its peak from December through March. Since the vaccinations require at least two weeks in your system to provide protection, getting your flu shot early is a good idea.

Flu Shot FAQs

Can a flu vaccine give you the flu?

  • No, the flu shot cannot cause the flu illness. Vaccines are created with either inactivated (killed) or incomplete viruses - designed to produce an immune response without spreading the illness.

Is a vaccine required every year?

  • Yes, everyone 6 months or older should be vaccinated annually. A person’s immune protection declines over time requiring an annual vaccination to get optimal protection

Will the flu shot keep you from getting the flu?

  • The facts are that the flu shot protects against the virus 40% to 60% of the time. Getting the vaccine also reduces your risk of hospitalization if you do get the flu.

Why not skip the vaccine and take your chances?

  • Influenza is serious business! Some protection is better than no protection. Taking steps to protect yourself can also limit the spread of influenza to others who are more vulnerable.

Vaccination Locations

Your doctor can provide vaccines for your family. If, however, finding appointments that fit your schedule is too difficult, several Franklin clinics can provide the vaccination at your convenience.

Other Precautions?

The flu is generally spread through tiny droplets expelled from the mouth and nose during talking, coughing, and sneezing. During the cold and flu season, there are some basic best practices that can slow the spread of germs that cause these respiratory illnesses. It is useful to note that the flu can be contagious up to two days before symptoms appear.

  • Wash hands frequently.
  • Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing – coughing into your sleeve, rather than hands.
  • Stay away from people who are sick.
